Target Species

Winter

Wintertime reef and wreck fishing in Islamorada offers steady action and comfortable weather. Yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, and lane snapper bite consistently, making this a great season for filling the cooler with fresh fish. King mackerel and Spanish mackerel migrate through the area, adding exciting surface action to the mix. Cooler water also brings in grouper, though keep in mind that Atlantic grouper season is closed from January through April, so these fish are catch-and-release until May.

Spring

As water temperatures rise, the reef comes alive with baitfish and hungry predators. Mutton snapper move in for their annual spawn, and grouper season officially reopens on May 1st, bringing back the chance to keep prized black and red grouper. Amberjack and cobia start showing up on the wrecks, providing powerful fights for anglers looking for a challenge. Calm seas and warm weather make this one of the best seasons for family-friendly reef trips.

Summer

Summer is all about variety and steady action. The reefs hold plenty of yellowtail and mangrove snapper, while deeper wrecks offer shots at amberjack, grouper, and African pompano. Calm mornings make for smooth rides, perfect for kids and families. This is a great time of year for almost any species you could want to target!

Fall

Fall is a transitional but productive time on the reefs. Snapper fishing stays excellent, and grouper remain active through the end of the year. As the water cools, king mackerel and cobia return, and reef predators like barracuda become more aggressive. With fewer boats on the water and pleasant weather, fall is one of the most relaxing and rewarding times for a half-day reef and wreck fishing adventure in Islamorada.

Where We Fish

These trips stay close to shore, usually never running more than a mile or two from the keys. We fish the many reefs and wrecks that dot our coastline and are full of life. The rides and oceans are almost always calm when staying close like this, making it a great bonus of these trips.
